1) What Is Powder Coating? Powder coating is an advanced method of applying a decorative as well as a protective finish to a wide range of materials and products (substrates) that are used by both industries and consumers. The powder used for the process is a mixture of finely ground particles of pigment and resin, which in turn is sprayed onto the surface which is to be coated. The powder is applied by spraying it through a gun which electro-statically charges the powder as it exits the tip. The powder is applied directly to a clean, bare metal surface with no primer or base coat required. The part that is being coated is electrically grounded, causing the charged powder to cling to it. After coating the part is placed into an oven to cure. In the curing process, the powder melts and flows over the surface of the object without any drips, runs or sags. The result is a highly durable and attractive finish in a wide variety of colors, glosses and textures. To view some of the Tiger Drylac colors available at the Powder Mill select a color chart from the list below.
Note: "The colors in the downloadable charts are ONLY displayed to give the viewer an overview of the color and finish selections available. Due to variances in computer monitors (such as color resolution, color temperature, etc.), video cards, and color printers, these files should not be used to make your final selection". (as stated by Tiger Drylac Canada on their products and services webpage) Please feel free to contact us here at the Powder Mill to schedule an appointment to make your final color selections, or to view color charts and coating samples.
2) Why Powder Coat? Powder coating gives consumers, businesses, and industry one of the most economical, longest lasting, and most color durable quality finishes available. Powder coated surfaces are more resistant to chipping, scratching, fading, and wearing than other finishes. Color selection is virtually unlimited with both high and low glosses, metallic as well as clear finishes available. Colors derived from powder coating also maintain their vibrancy longer. Texture selections are also available, in a wide range including smooth, wrinkled, matte, and rough (designed for hiding surface imperfections) finishes. Another benefit to powder coating is that parts are cured within the oven, allowing for a quick turnover of your parts. Powder coating is also highly protective of our environment. While liquid finishes contain solvents which have pollutants known as Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC), powder coating contains no solvents and releases negligible amounts of VOCs, if any, into the atmosphere. Thus there is no longer a need for finishers to buy costly pollution control equipment.
3) Where Is Powder Coating Being Used? Powder coating is extensively used on many consumer products such as appliances, furniture, fixtures, automotive parts, sporting goods, electronics etc. Commercial applications include store fixtures and office furniture, in addition to perimeter and ornamental railings , it is also used in farm implements and in many industrial applications (such as oilfield applications) -- places where durability and high resistance to chemical and environmental stresses are needed. Powder coating applications can also be an excellent choice for re-finishing items such as motorcycles and automotive parts etc.
4) How do I maintain a Powder Coat finish? While most powder coat finishes are tougher and much more flexible than conventional solvent based paints, they are approximately the same hardness as automotive paint - so they will scratch. To clean a powder coated surface use the same care and methods you would use to clean your car. Gently wash with a clean soft cloth and a mild detergent, followed by a clear water rinse. Even though most powder coatings are highly resistant, certain solvents can harm them. Avoid contact with nail polish remover, paint or lacquer thinner, motor oils, transmission and brake fluids or parts cleaning fluids. If any of these should contact the powder coated surface, immediately wipe the area with a soft clean cloth and clean as described above.
